LOZA GALLERY RESIDENCY, Medulin, Croatia 2011

Whilst in Croatia I was commissioned to produce a site specific sculpture for exhibition in the Loza Gallery in the centre of the town. It was to be created purely from found objects from the area and initially will be part of the ‘Od Smeca Do Umjetnosti’ exhibition, which roughly translates as ‘Rubbish into Art’.

I was overwhelmed by the hospitality of the people, I was given fresh fish from the fishing boats, wild asparagus collected from the coastal flora and vegetables grown in the local gardens. For the main structure I used two pieces of wood previously parts of a fishing boat, mesh from the mosquito net of an old door and garden ties. Jointly these elements epitomised the hospitality that I received from the community and how they respect and work with nature and its resources. I named the piece ‘SUSTENANCE’- feeds the body and the soul.

Also whilst in residence in the Loza Gallery I provided a presentation of my professional practice, a 3-D mixed media workshop around the materials and skills used in the production of my commission, and was interviewed by the local TV, covering both exhibitions for a documentary programme.
